At the IAA Transportation show in Hannover, hydrogen stole the spotlight with Renault unveiling its Master H2-Tech Prototype. Set to launch next year, this hydrogen-powered van will become part of Renault’s commercial vehicle lineup, with specialised after-sales support and dealerships trained to handle hydrogen tech.
Hydrogen isn't new for the Master van. The previous generation got the H2-Tech in 2022, but this new model comes with some major upgrades based on feedback from existing users. The hydrogen system is now fully integrated into the van’s platform without cutting into cargo space or affecting its payload. For comparison, the all-electric Master E-Tech can carry up to 1,125kg and has a load volume of 14.8 cubic meters in its largest version (L3H3 body size).
Renault previously claimed a 310-mile range for the old H2-Tech. But with a new battery and more efficient fuel cell tech, the new model can reach up to 434 miles. Plus, it comes with a custom infotainment system to keep you updated on the status of the hydrogen system.
In the UK, with only 16 hydrogen filling stations, the extended range will be a big help. But this won’t be such a problem in the EU, where countries like France and Germany are working on building hydrogen infrastructure to allow vehicles like this to travel long distances easily. Renault has even partnered with Plug Power to form Hyvia, which provides businesses with the option to buy, lease, or rent hydrogen filling stations.
The H2-Tech version of the Master will be produced alongside the internal combustion engine and electric models at Renault’s Batilly plant in France. Prices are still under wraps since it's in the concept phase.
