Sebastian Vettel’s weekend in Turkey got off to a bad start, with an accident on his fifth lap of the first practice session. Vettel hit the kerb on the way out of turn 8 at the Istanbul Park Circuit, the car then spun and hit the barriers, damaging both the front and rear of the car. Several other drivers spun out on the same corner, including Michael Schumacher, Pastor Maldonado, Sebastian Buemi and Timo Glock.

Ferrari driver Fernando Alonso set the fastest time for practice 1 with a time of 1:38.670, with Mercedes’ drivers Nico Rosberg and Michael Schumacher second and third with times of 1:40.072 and 1:40.132.

Mclaren drivers Jenson Button and Lewis Hamilton didn’t complete any fast laps, with Jenson only completing one slow lap, and Hamilton not even leaving the pit lane. HRT’s Narain Karthikeyan stopped early in the session suffering from an engine problem and Williams driver Pastor Maldonado had a second off on turn 11, where he lost control of the car and backed into the barrier. The video of Sebastian Vettel’s accident is available for viewing on the right.
