The new engine is available on the A3, Sportback, and Cabriolet variants. The A3 and Sportback reach 62mph in 11.4 seconds, charge to 121mph, emit 109g/km of CO2, and achieve a combined average of 68.9mpg. However, the A3 Cabriolet is marginally slower and less efficient than its more sober stable-mate.
The A3's impressive fuel economy is partially due to start-stop technology. This system cuts power when the vehicle is in neutral and the clutch is released. It then automatically re-starts, within two-tenths of a second, once the clutch is depressed. Audi claim this reduces emissions by approximately 5g/km.
The Audi A3 1.6 TDI is available from £17,485 to £20,645 on-the-road.
