Company directors of Bristol Cars were forced to call in administrators at the end of last week. Chairman of Bristol Cars Toby Silverton said ‘it has not been possible for the company to continue to trade in its present structure and, while the decision has been taken regretfully, I am confident that a future for the business will be found.'
Recovery specialists RSM Tenon are handling the administration and hope to find a buyer for Bristol Cars as a going concern. Cars will still be sold and serviced during the process, but a spokesman confirmed that all twenty jobs had already been lost at the Bristol factory, as well as two of the seven in the London showroom.
The firm was a spin-off from the Bristol Aeroplane Company, which made the RAF Blenheim bomber, and produced its first model in 1946. From 1960 the company was run by car-loving eccentric Tony Crook. Crook sold the company in 2001 to Silverton, who pledged to continue the company's low-key, low-volume approach from the single Kensington showroom in London. The current models on offer at its sole showroom, on High Street Kensington, West London, range in style from the Fighter which has a top speed of more than 200mph and capable of 0 to 60mph in less than four seconds to the Blenheim, which offers "authoritative performance, elegant understatement and imperturbable stability at speed”.
Recent customers have included pop stars Bono and Liam Gallagher and entrepreneur Sir Richard Branson.
