The Car2go scheme that enables motorists to rent vehicles by the minute has been extended in London. As such, the five-hundred strong fleet of smart cars – that have automatic transmission, air-conditioning, sat-nav and low carbon emissions - can now be found in: Wimbledon, Raynes Park, Kingston, Richmond, South Lambeth, South Southwark and Croydon. As the scheme has been serving Islington and Sutton since December 2012, Car2go now covers one-hundred square miles of the capital. It also enables motorists to collect vehicles without having to pre-book, drive for only a few minutes or the entire day, and return them to locations that suit their requirements. Car2go also has fleets in numerous cities across the world such as Birmingham in the UK.
Stefan Mueller Discusses London Car2go Scheme
“Many Londoners have already started to use this new on-demand way of travelling around the city,” said Stefan Mueller, CEO of Car2go Europe GmbH. “Expanding our free-floating business area allows us to offer the Car2go service to even more people.”
How The Car2go Scheme Works
The Car2go scheme is easy to use. The motorist's first step is to register as a member for £29.90. A card will then be sent through the post within three to five working days. He/she then locates a vehicle via the company's website, its mobile phone/tablet application, or the Car2go Facebook application. There is also a pre-book facility if preferred. Step three is to approach the vehicle – which is easy to spot thanks to its vibrant blue and white paint – then hold the membership card to a reader behind its windscreen. This unlocks the doors. The motorist then enters a pin number on a touch-screen display and rates the vehicle's condition. Its key is then released. The cost of the journey is 35 pence per-minute including fuel and insurance, falling to £14.90 per-hour and £59 per-day. Then – once the car is no longer required – it can be left in any available and unrestricted free public parking bay within the Car2go home area. It can also be returned to metered and shared residential parking areas in Islington and Sutton. There is, however, potential for further expense if the driver is careless or unlucky. As such, Car2go charges £300 for a lost key, £50 for moving an illegally parked car, and at least £50 for “special” cleaning or repair due to infringement of its terms and conditions.
