Motorists rate best motorway service stations in England as families prepare for half-term travel adventures

M4 Reading Services is best in England

England’s Top 10 Motorway Service Stations 2017 have been revealed via a survey of thousands of visitors and Reading Services, M4, Westbound, took top spot, Transport Focus revealed. Among other things, motorists rated its car park, toilets and food alongside every other motorway service station in the country. The top 10 is:

  • 1. Reading Services Westbound (Moto) – M4
  • 2. Rivington Services Northbound (EuroGarages) – M61
  • 3. Corley Services Northbound (Welcome Break) – M6
  • 4. Gloucester Services Southbound (Westmorland) – M5
  • 5. Gloucester Services Northbound (Westmorland)
  • 6. Knutsford Services Southbound (Moto) – M6
  • 7. Norton Canes Services (Roadchef) – M6 Toll
  • 8. Tebay Services Northbound (Westmorland) – M6
  • 9. Tebay Services Southbound (Westmorland) – M6
  • 10. Cobham Services (Extra) – M25

Of the 112 motorway service stations throughout England, the survey confirmed that most visitors had positive experiences. It revealed:

  • 92% thought the approach signs were very good/fairly good
  • 89% said the slip road was very good/fairly good
  • 87% claimed the car park layout was very good/fairly good
  • 81% said the building’s exterior looked very good/fairly good
  • 75% argued the wi-fi was very good/fairly good
  • 90% thought toilet cleanliness was very good/fairly good
  • 92% said the quality of food/drink was very good/fairly good
  • 64% thought the food/drink was very good/fairly good value
  • 20 felt happier/more relaxed having visited
  • 17% felt less tired, frustrated or stressed having visited

Industry expert discusses survey results

Anthony Smith, Transport Focus Chief Executive, said: “Our research shows, up and down the country, that services are providing customers with a good experience and playing a positive role in helping them rest and recharge before continuing to drive. They tell us they feel less stressed and more awake after a good break.”

Mr Smith concluded: “Motorway service operators must not rest on their laurels, however. Our message is to use the results to deliver even higher levels of customer satisfaction in the future”.

Lowest rated motorway service stations in England

The survey suggested that not every motorway service station excelled on every occasion, though. The lowest rates were:

  • 106. Winchester Services Southbound (Moto) - M3

  • 109. Rownhams Services Northbound (Roadchef) - M27
  • 110. Rownhams Services Southbound (Roadchef) - M27
