Sebastian Vettel took pole position in Montreal, Canada, a place where he and Red Bull were expected to be at a disadvantage. Vettel took pole with a time of 1m 13.014s, just 0.185 faster than second place Fernando Alonso.

Jerome D’Ambrosio did not qualify inside the 107% time rule, but the steward’s have used their discretion to allow him to race, and he will start at the back of the grid.

Qualifying 3 saw Felipe Massa achieve his best qualifying place this season, with third place, just behind his team-mate Fernando Alonso. Mark Webber managed to qualify fourth just ahead of Lewis Hamilton in fifth place. Jenson Button only managed to qualify seventh, between the Mercedes’ GP cars of Nico Rosberg in Sixth and Michael Schumacher in eighth. Renault drivers Nick Heidfeld and Vitaly Petrov managed ninth and tenth respectively.
