Ford will claim the environmental high ground at the Frankfurt Motor Show with the introduction of a Focus with class-leading low CO2 emissions. Joe Bakaj, vice president of product development at Ford of Europe said: “We will set the new benchmark with a CO2 figure of 115g/km for conventional technology.”

This will be launched at the show in the diesel engine-based Ford Focus ECOnetic which will go on sale by the end of the year.

It will join a range of eight environmentally friendly Ford vehicles which use diesel and flex-fuel technology.

The Focus ECOnetic is powered by a 1.6-litre engine with standard diesel particulate filter.

“The challenge for the engineering team was to deliver the maximum reduction in CO2 using available and affordable technologies,” said Gunnar Herrmann, Ford’s vehicle line director for medium cars.

“The result of this work is both a class-leading vehicle and some useful lessons learned which we can apply to all diesel models in the Focus range over time.”
