News flash. The Mercedes-Benz E-Class 250 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY SE is one of the most versatile models in the range. It is highly efficient, for example, so this hefty machine averages an impressive 57.6mpg. This rises to a cash saving 67.3mpg on the extra-urban cycle. Remarkably, this machine burns less fuel than some superminis. This frugality means its emissions are very low for the class, so twelve months road tax only costs £95.

Despite its cost-cutting tendencies this sleek saloon is nippy. It rockets to 62mph in 7.7 seconds and is capable of 149mph. No surprise though, the 2.143-litre engine produces 204ps and sends its power through seven-speed automatic transmission. This process feels virtually effortless. Even when accelerating hard this mighty machine is smoother than James Bond's best chat-up line. There is no sense of drama, the view through the large windscreen simply evolves quickly. The E-Class is a remarkably comfortable cruiser.

The Mercedes-Benz E-Class 250 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY SE - despite sitting fairly low in the range - has a pleasing specification. This includes: leather seats, Bluetooth, parking sensors, MP3 compatibility, alloy wheels, the electronic stability programme, and electric everything. It has a large boot too, for a saloon, so its cargo capacity is 540-litres. Frugality, speed, and style in one beautifully constructed package. What a fantastic car.
