What happens when we mix the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Roadster, David Coulthard, and a professional golfer? Answer... a new world record. Picture the scene, please. Golfer Jake Shepherd grabs his favourite putter and whacks his little white ball. This charges through the air at one-hundred and seventy-eight miles per-hour. Mr Coulthard – one of Formula 1's finest – then finishes his lunch and climbs aboard a mighty Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Roadster. He then cruises along at one-hundred and twenty-five miles per-hour while watching the ball, then manoeuvres his car into its path. The ball lands in the cabin, setting a new record for the “farthest golf shot to be caught in a moving car”. How fantastic.

Coulthard said: “The only way to track the ball was to keep your eyes on it all the time. It’s a real adrenaline rush but it’s not the most comfortable thing to do because, for a moment, you’re not watching the road.” David added: “I was as happy as I’ve ever been winning a Grand Prix because I was so surprised quite frankly that it went in - and went in so solidly.”

The Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Roadster is a remarkable machine. Why? Because its 6.2-litre V8 engine produces 571bhp, for starters, propelling F1 stars to 62mph in a golf shattering 3.8 seconds. Top speed is 197mph. That is what £176,925 buys. What you cannot purchase is David Coulthard. He competed in Formula 1 between 1994 and 2008 claiming thirteen wins, twelve pole positions, sixty-two podiums, and eighteen fastest laps. He now races in DTM, is part of the BBC's F1 coverage, and loves “playing” with golf balls.
