The Motability Car Scheme is one of the easiest ways for disabled motorists to source the best value new cars. Eligible participants must receive either the higher rate mobility component of the disability living allowance, or the war pensioners' mobility supplement. The scheme offers two options, the hire purchase agreement and the more popular three year lease. These are paid for using all or part of the benefit, but the latter may also require an advance payment for expensive models.

Motorists can choose from a wide variety of vehicles under the scheme. Noteworthy leasing bargains include the Peugeot 308 SW which, depending on specification, is available with either no advance payment or various amounts up to £2,299. This is in addition to the total weekly value of the benefit. However, if the 308 SW is too large or expensive, the smaller Peugeot 107 1.0-litre Urban is listed for weekly payments of £47.99 with no advance payment.

Alternatively, those who fancy slipping into something prestigious may prefer the Mercedes-Benz A Class. This fashionable multi-purpose vehicle is available in A160 Classic SE specification for the total weekly value of the benefit, plus an advance payment of £499. It is also listed as a fuel efficient diesel for the higher up-front payment of £799. The diesel averages 16mpg more than its petrol powered sibling, so may be the more cost effective long term choice for high mileage drivers.

Fiat is also tempting consumers with offers of the stylish 500. These include the 1.2-litre Pop from £45.99 per week with no advance payment, and the 1.2-litre Sport for the total value of the benefit plus a modest £99 advance payment. Sun lovers can join the party in the 500C convertible for a £989 up-front payment plus the Government's weekly contribution. The choice, as they say, is yours.
