The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders have reported that the number of new cars sold in the UK during the month of May was 134,858. The fall is the 13th consecutive monthly decline in new car sales. The sales are 25% lower compared with the same month last year. The best selling cars during the month of May were the Ford Fiesta with 48,185 sold in the year to date followed by the Ford Focus with the Vauxhall Corsa and Volkswagen Golf close behind. A total of 748,691 vehicles have been sold in the UK so far in 2009 which is 27.9% down from last year.
It is thought that the month of June would bring an improvement as the car scrappage incentive scheme worth £2000 only came into effect on the 18th May. There has been an encouraging start to June with 35,000 orders being placed since the scheme was announced. Schemes introduced in Europe have succeeded in boosting sales and hopefully a similar impact will emerge in the UK during the next half of the year.
