The new Ford Ka Grand Prix is more 'in your face' than a feisty traffic warden. Consider the paintwork, for example. There are two choices, bright red with a white stripe or white with a red stripe. These themes are continued on the seats. Oh, nice? This city car also has: a coloured grill, rear spoiler, sixteen-inch alloys, chrome exhaust, and its mats have contrasting stitching. Sounds perfect for shrinking violets who want to blend into the background. And the price of this plaything? Write a brightly coloured cheque for £11,045.

Actually, best think twice. The Ford Ka Grand Prix – because of its sporty name – sounds like it could take-on a Formula 1 car. No chance. This 'individual' edition Ka is, in fact, based on the £10,295 Zetec trim. As such it has a 1.2-litre 69ps engine, takes an unremarkable 13.4 seconds to reach 62mph, and stops pulling at 99mph. Hardly a hot-hatch then. But so what? This machine suits those who want the style of a sporty car without the punishing running costs. The Grand Prix averages 57.7mpg. It is a pure fashion statement, a bit of fun, and who cares about speed? It makes people smile and that is more than can be said for most city cars. Long live the fantastic Ford Ka Grand Prix.
