New Mercedes SL63 AMG
The new Mercedes SL63 AMG will be fitted with the 6.2-litre V8 now seen across the AMG range.
With 518bhp the SL matches the S-Class and CL63 in having the most powerful version of the tuner's in-house developed V8. It also eclipses the supercharged 55's 493bhp by some margin, even if the 4.6-second 0-62mph time is just a tenth faster. But the biggest news is the first sighting of AMG's new gearbox. Based on the Mercedes 7G-Tronic seven-speed auto, the AMG Speedshift transmission blurs the boundaries between the traditional torque converter autos seen in all AMGs and the increasingly sophisticated automated manuals and dual clutch units used by key competitors like BMW M.
The cosmetic changes are obvious enough and follow the format seen in the general SL facelift. On the inside the most obvious new feature - bar a new three-spoke steering wheel - is the AMG Drive Unit. This rotary switch controls the aforementioned gearbox modes, the adjustable Active Body Control dampers and the new three-stage ESP system, as seen on the C63 AMG. This offers a new halfway house setting, known as ESP Sport, which allows a bit of leeway before stepping in and protecting your blushes.
