Sorry... nobody can purchase a Porsche Macan. But why? The problem is that this car
does not exist – and that makes life tricky at the point of sale. In fact, wannabe owners
must wait until 2013 before this sports-utility-vehicle rolls-off the production line in Leipzig,
Germany. This factory is now being enhanced with new painting and body assembly
facilities, at a cost of 500 million Euros. That might be the price of a Macan. I say 'might' –
we cannot be sure - as this SUV's price and specification are still a closely guarded secret.
However, a few facts have sneaked into the public domain. 'Macan' is derived from
the Indonesian word for 'tiger'. This beast – according to the sports car manufacturer –
'combines suppleness, power, fascination and dynamics – core characteristics of this new
all-terrain car'. Does that suggest the Macan will have stripes? Big teeth, perhaps? Either
way, it is likely to be a tremendous machine that sets the standards competitors aspire too.
Bernhard Maier, Executive Vice President Sales and Marketing of Porsche AG,
commented: “The Macan combines all sports car characteristics with the benefits of an
SUV and is a genuine Porsche”. He added: “The name of a new Porsche has to fit with the
brand, sound good in very many languages and dialects, and evoke positive associations.”
Can hardly wait for the Porsche Poodle.
