The new Skoda Citigo has three doors, two headlights, and – perhaps - one silly name.

The new Skoda Citigo has three doors, two headlights, and – perhaps - one silly name. Still, “Citigo” sounds fairly sensible compared to Volkswagen “Up!” - which is essentially the same car in different clothing. That said, the Czech version looks more mature than its youthful sibling. It feels restrained, sensible – like a middle-aged accountant in a nice suit. The cabin has some different fabrics too, although the basic layout is similar. The Skoda is also likely to be cheaper than the Volkswagen, although we will have to wait until June 2012 to be certain. The 'word' in the clothing store is that prices will start at around £7,500.

The Skoda Citigo will initially be available with two engines, both 1.0-litre petrol units. These produce 59 and 74bhp, and propel this run-around to 62mph in 13.9 and 12 seconds respectively. These complement five-speed manual transmission, and an automatic version will follow in due course. Furthermore, the Citigo's handling is composed, the ride comfortable, and it is easier to drive than a top-spec golf buggy. This compact cruiser also feels robust - as we expect from Skoda - so it should last longer than your latest winter wardrobe. Good car then, I can hardly wait for the Skoda “Motorway-Go”.
