Comparing the Nissan Pixo and the Toyota Yaris is like evaluating a banana against a three-course dinner. Both may have the same basic function, i.e. to feed people, but they go about it in very different ways. The Pixo, for example, is a 'city car' class vehicle. The entry-level model is identical to the top-spec as there is only one trim - the 1.0-litre Visia 5dr Hatchback. As such, this vehicle only focusses on being basic no-nonsense transport.

In contrast, the Toyota Yaris is a superior 'supermini' class machine and comes in various shapes and sizes. Expect to pay more though. Whereas the Nissan Pixo only costs £6,995, prices for the Yaris start at £11,170. So, what do you get for the extra £4,175? The far larger boot, for starters, plus a few more toys. Extras include the: electric front windows, electric mirrors, and central locking, Fair enough – but here comes the surprise.

Despite the Toyota Yaris being far more expensive, in many ways the popular Pixo is superior. As such the Nissan has two more doors than its entry-level opponent, and reaches 62mph in 14 seconds compared to 15.7. It is more fuel efficient too, averaging 64.2mpg rather than 58.9mpg. That is a difference of 5.3mpg. The capable Nissan Pixo also has lower carbon emissions than its pricey rival, so it is marginally cheaper to tax.

On the plus side, for Toyota lovers, the Yaris is nicer to drive and feels less cut price than the Pixo. But still, would you pay a further £4,175 for a slower, thirstier, more polluting car with two less doors? If value for money is your main priority, say 'hello' to the Nissan Pixo.
