Car maintenance can be something of a dark art. To the untrained, a mechanic can tell you that many things need doing to your car when in actual fact it seems to be running just fine and dandy. It’s no surprise that sub standard work and overcharging by some garages seem to be common, according to the Trading Standards Agency.
One of the favourite tricks is charging for the best engine oil then using the cheapest. Some garages will siphon the old oil from the engine rather than draining through the sump as it’s easier. Then they put new oil in to a dirty engine - a complete waste of time and your money - but how would you know any different?
Carparts-direct.co.uk has a new service helping motorists carry out their own engine service and avoid becoming a victim. Clicking onto ’Ask the Expert’ you can enquire online and receive an email tailored just for your model of vehicle. With UK garage labour rates now the highest in Europe, an engine service can cost well over £500, so it has to be worth saving some cash.
Speaking of saving cash (!?), the Formula 1 circus is back from this weekend, with new rules, new drivers and new teams. This season threatens (I hope!) to be close, with possibly 5 drivers up for contention as World Champion. My money is on Schumacher taking his 8th title then calling it a day, but maybe Button will finally break his duck and surprise us all?
Happy motoring !
