The Subaru Legacy Tourer 2.0D S 5dr may only be the mid-spec model – but it still costs a hefty £24,865. Great! That suits me fine. Generally, in my experience, we get what we pay for - and this load-lugger is no exception. Its diesel engine produces 150PS, which propels this family workhorse to 62mph in 9.6 seconds. That makes it the joint fastest model in the range. Furthermore, this lifestyle statement is the most fuel efficient. Expect to average 46.3mpg and to return 53.3mpg on the extra-urban cycle. That is fair considering its large proportions. Emissions are reasonable too, so this Legacy can be taxed annually for £165.

The Subaru Legacy Tourer 2.0D S 5dr also has a fantastic specification. This includes permanent four-wheel-drive which is unusual in the sector. This robust mile-muncher also has: duel-zone climate control, Bluetooth, MP3 connectivity, cruise control, and an electronic stability programme. Furthermore, the rear seats fold flat increasing cargo capacity from 526 to 1,677-litres. That is considerable, and beautifully complements the composed handling, smooth ride, excellent safety features, and swanky badge. It is clearly a capable car and a worthy rival to the Mercedes-Benz C-Class. Long live the Legacy 5dr.
