Did you know... the Jaguar XKR-S, VW Polo, Chrysler Grand Voyager, Fiat 500C, and the MINI Cooper Works are “all” the top summer holiday car for 2012? Why? Because motorists and holidays come in more shapes and sizes than sweets at a pick and mix counter, and this range of cars includes something for everyone. The Jaguar XKR-S, for starters, suits couples who fancy cruising across Europe in a Grand Tourer. After all it handles beautifully, looks superb, has a nice ride, and hits 62mph in 4.4 seconds. Only travel agents with huge sales targets move faster. The price for this 5.0-litre 550bhp coupé is £97,430, so holiday goers might have to save money by booking cheap hotels. Next to a sweet factory, maybe.

That brings us to the Volkswagen Polo BlueMotion 1.2 TDI 5dr. This supermini's main strength is its staggering fuel efficiency, which enables cost conscious holiday makers to travel huge distances for the price of a Liquorish Allsort. In fact, this £15,830 fuel-sipper averages 80.7mpg, and returns 91.1mpg on the extra-urban cycle. Even through town it manages 67.3mpg. The VW Polo BlueMotion also has composed handling, a decent boot, solid build quality, and reassuring safety features. This makes it tastier than Harrods toffee.

The Chrysler Grand Voyager 2.8 CRD Limited is another mouth-watering prospect. This suits family motorists as it has seven seats and the boot is bigger than a sweet maker's sugar store. In fact, cargo capacity is 756-litres – even with a full complement of passengers. This increases to a mighty 3,296-litres when a few holiday makers are abandoned by the roadside and the rear seats are folded flat. Remarkably, that is 1,364-litres larger than the Mercedes-Benz E-Class Estate. The Chrysler Grand Voyager also has plenty of toys. These include: six-speed auto transmission, leather seats, Bluetooth, and parking sensors. All for £36,245. Also, a rear entertainment system can be added for £950 to keep kids quiet and happy. Either that, or stick their mouths shut with sticky toffee.

The final tasty treats in our top five summer holiday cars are the Fiat 500C Abarth and the MINI Hatchback John Cooper Works 3dr. Why? Because holidays should be fun, and these are the most fun anyone can have for less than £25,000 outside Willy Wonka's Chocolate Factory. As such they look fantastic, feel superb on the road, and hit 62mph in 7.9 and 6.5 seconds respectively. All for £16,861 and £22,455. The Fiat 500C and the MINI are fashionable too, so they turn more heads than a limited edition Wonka Bar. Who could want more? Now, please point me to the nearest sweet shop – we really need sugar.
