This is much more of a family car. It was first launched in 1997 and is the world’s first and bestselling commercial hybrid car. A new Prius model is due to be launched sometime in 2009. The car has a maximum speed of 106 mph and is capable of 0 - 62 mph in 10.9 seconds. Prices start at £17,780

BMW 118d Saloon CO2: 119 g/km
This is another family sized car – it was declared 2008 World Green Car due to the efficient dynamics technology used to cut emissions but still maintain performance. It achieves an impressive 0-100 km/h in 8.9 seconds and prices start from £18,350

FORD Focus 1.6 TDCi ECOnetic CO2: 115 g/km

Ford have named their low CO2 car range the ECOnetic range the Ford Focus being the first, later in the year the Mondeo will follow and then the Fiesta in 2009. Prices start at £16,050

MINI Cooper D 108bhp 1.6 CO2: 104 g/km

This is a fantastic small car. This new model also includes a switch point display that recommends to the driver when to change gear to maximize fuel economy. It is capable of an impressive 72.4 mpg. The engine also has an auto start-stop function that switches the engine off when the vehicle is stationary and in neutral this then engages the clutch to restart the engine. Prices begin at £14,420

Honda Civic IMA CO2: 116/km

The civic is the first of Honda’s new petrol-electric system known as Integrated Motor Assist (IMA). The Civic maintains 50-52 mpg and has fuel economy extras as with the Mini cooper with the auto start stop function, why use energy when you are not moving. Prices start at £14,000

Skoda Fabia Greenline Estate CO2: 109g/km

Skoda claims that this family estate car has the best green credentials than any estate car available in the Fabia price range. It is also available in a hatchback version. The prices start at £12 140 for the estate. It is capable of 69 mpg which is very impressive.

Citroen C3 1.6HDi CO2: 118g/km

The Citroen C3 is an efficient straightforward car smaller than the Citroen Picasso. It achieves 64.2 mpg and is capable of 0-60 in 10.8 seconds. Prices start at £13,000

Peugeot 207 SW, 1.6 HDi CO2: 119g/km

This is a small sized family estate car. It has a big boot and is very affordable. The Peugeot 207 replaced the 206. The price starts at £13 900.
