The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration in the United States has issued a statement for owners of certain Lexus and Toyota models produced from 2004 to 2009 to remove any removable floor mats from the driver’s footwell as they make an investigation into claims that the floor mats could jam the accelerator pedal.
Toyota believes that there is a possibility that certain mats jam the accelerator pedal down. Instructions have been given that if the accelerator is stuck then an attempt to remove the mat first should be tried, if this fails the car should be put into neutral and brought to a stop, desperation is to turn the engine off and apply the brakes.
It is only the US market Toyota models that are affected and the amount could be in the region of 3.8 million, Toyota models affected include the Toyota Prius, Camry, Avalon, Tacoma, and the Tundra. The Lexus models include the Lexus ES350 and the Lexus IS250 and IS 350.
