The new Mercedes E-Class has gracefully glided into Motoring.co.uk's Twelve Cars of Christmas list in position ten. This stocking full of motoring marvels is a concoction of our favourite vehicles based on economy, space, price, style, and popularity. So, why does this Germanic leviathan appear on the list?

The latest E-Class was introduced in 2009 and is a supremely comfortable and spacious vehicle. The styling is sharper and more aggressive than its predecessor, but the late generation's mechanical toughness and high specification remain. Even basic versions have seven air bags, parking sensors, and 'attention assist' to detect driver fatigue on the way home from Christmas parties.

This fashionable cruiser is also available with a choice of eight engines. These range from the economical 2.2-litre 134bhp diesel, to the monstrous 5.5-litre V8 petrol. This latter model produces 381bhp and is capable of an attention grabbing 155mph. However, attempting this speed will demote you to Santa's naughty list.

The Mercedes E-Class deserves its place on the Christmas list because it delivers everything reasonably expected from a luxury vehicle. It is powerful, refined, beautifully constructed, and devastatingly fashionable. Running costs are inevitably high, but quality is expensive and the E-Class is no exception. Prices range from £26,325 - £47,010.
