CITROËN is enhancing the driver convenience of the C5 with the introduction of an automatic transmission for the range-topping 173 bhp 2.2HDi engine, in both saloon and estate models with prices starting at £18,840 on-the-road for the VTX+ auto hatchback.

This follows on from the recent addition of the fuel-efficient diesel unit to the company’s flagship C6 line-up.

The C5 2.2HDi automatic offers 39 mpg on the combined cycle, to complement the six-speed manual gearbox model that is already on-sale in the UK. Maximum torque of 295 lb.ft is available from 1,750 rpm while the car can hit a top speed of 138 mph and go from 0-62 mph in 9.5 seconds.

The 2.2HDi powerplant has also been recently introduced into the C6 range where it boasts CO2 emissions of 175g/km. Mated to a six-speed manual transmission the engine returns 43 mpg on the combined cycle, maximum torque of 273 lb.ft at 1,500 rpm, along with a top speed of 135 mph and 0-62 mph acceleration of under 10 seconds. Prices start at £28,045 for the standard model.

On both C5 and C6 models, the ‘green’ credentials of the Euro4 compliant powerplant are reinforced by the fitment of the company’s Diesel Particulate Filter System (DPFS), which reduces particulate emissions to virtually immeasurable levels. (Citroën: June 11).
