Volkswagen will produce a fabulous mid-engined sports car called the Volkswagen Bluesport. The Volkswagen BlueSport ticks the environmental boxes. It has an efficient turbo diesel engine which will deliver 65mpg whilst boasting performance figures of a top speed of 140mph and 0.62mph in 6.6 seconds.
The car was shown at the Detroit motor show in January and there is currently only one in existence. There has been no official date for production of the Volkswagen BluesSport but the guess would be within the next three years.
The Volkswagen Bluesport looks similar to the Boxster and also promises similar performance, it is estimated to be around the £25,000 in price and possibly less for a smaller engined version. The steering on the Volkswagen Bluesport is the electro-hydraulic system taken from the VW Polo, and while it’s a little lighter than you might expect in a sports car it is direct and responsive.
The last time Volkswagen built a two-seater roadster was in 1975, when production of the stylish Karmann Ghia convertible ended, that led to the development of the VW-Porsche 914, which had been intended to replace the Karmann Ghia for VW and form a new entry-level model for Porsche. Unfortunately political infighting led to VW leaving Porsche to go it alone. Today VW has turned the tables and built its own Porsche-rivaling roadster.
