The A3 S-Line convertible is the true descendant of the iconic VW Golf Cabriolet. Whereas the VW model has mutated into the rather mundane and euro-bland EOS, the Audi has retained all the charm, looks and feel of the original Golf.

For those aficionados of the VW Scene, the S-Line is like a grown up VW Colour Concept, with the lurid yellows and greens of the Golf’s interior replaced by a more grown up dark leather and cloth sports trim, with lumbar and shoulder support. You can specify a full leather interior, or go the whole hog with Audi exclusive trim and choose your own colour of leather and stitching.

Other S-Line interior features are a sports steering wheel, aluminium sill trims and climate control whilst on the exterior you gain a diffuser insert, chrome trimmed exhaust and sports front bumper. The S-Line Black edition is more striking, with 18 inch Titanium colour alloys, acoustic rear parking, unique race style steering wheel, Xenon headlights with LED daytime lights like the A5, exterior body kit and BOSE sound system all giving it the X factor.

Boot capacity with passengers in the rear is poor, but with split fold rear seats you actually have a very useful space if there’s nobody in the back. This is a great feature sadly lacking in many competitors with their folding hard tops. The acoustic roof on the A3 keeps noise to acceptable levels, with a multi layered skin keeping noise out.

Like most cabriolets, it’s a four seater. Rear legroom and headroom are fine but not good, and the driving position is comfortable. There are a choice of petrol engines from the 1.2 supercharged units to a 1.8 Turbo with 160 ps that is more than adequate, or the faster200 ps unit from the Golf GTi .

There are two diesel engines, the 1.6 TDi 105 ps version which delivers 105 ps or the 2.0TDi at 140ps. The best combinations for economy is the 1.6 TDi, whilst we like the 2.0 TDi as a mixture of great economy and decent performance, with 61.4 mpg on the combined cycle and 0-62 miles per hour in under 10 seconds.

Prices start from £20295 for the Audi A3 cabriolet 1.2 SE, and S-Line prices start from £23695.
