Wallet on standby. The Audi R8 Spyder V10 5.2 FSI Quattro R Tronic is the most expensive car produced by the prestigious manufacturer. How much then? £75,000 perhaps? £100,000? Nope, this bank-buster costs a staggering £123,020. The high- end Audi A8 L – which rivals the Jaguar XJ – only costs £94,510. The Audi Q7 6.0 V12 looks cheap in comparison too, as this rugged 4x4 could be crippling your finances for only £100,370. So, why is the top-of-the-range Audi R8 Spyder worth more than a small house?

Let us consider performance. The 5.2-litre V10 engine produces 525ps and propels wealthy thrill-seekers to 62mph in 4.1 seconds. It is, therefore, only 0.4 seconds slower to 62mph than the Ferrari California - and that road legal rocket costs £227,077. The Audi is also capable of a barely believable 194mph, so it is quicker than the most expensive Aston Martin Virage. That particular lump of metal costs £159,995 - £36,975 more than the Audi.

The vehicle's price is further justified by its image. It is an Audi, for starters, so the badge alone makes motorists weak at the knees. This machine is also a convertible which earns fashion followers even more bragging points. It goes without saying that the handling is tremendously composed and highly entertaining. On these terms - and in comparison to cars with similar performance - the R8 Spyder V10 is cheaper than a bag of old spanners.
