The new Citroen Berlingo HDi 90 L1 850 Enterprise has the comfort of a passenger car, according to its French manufacturer. Perhaps this is a reasonable claim. After all, this capable companion has parking sensors, air-conditioning, Bluetooth, and heated/electric door mirrors as standard. Luxury loving van drivers can even specify cruise control for £150. Quite a contrast to most utilitarian vehicles that have the specification of an early eighties bicycle.

As well as fantastic equipment, the Citroen Berlingo HDi 90 L1 850 Enterprise is a spacious hold-all. Its storage capacity is 3.3m3, the payload 625kg, and its load length is an impressive 1,800mm. This can be increased to 3,000mm by folding the passenger seat flat. This makes it easy to carry lengthy loads such as pipes, skirting boards, and the van's standard equipment list. Access is simple via the sliding side panel and the rear doors that open to 180 degrees.

Power comes from a 1.6-litre diesel engine that produces 90hp at 4,000rpm. This five-speed manually geared load-lugger also has 215Nm of torque – so it has plenty of low-end poke. Despite its power this mile-muncher returns a cost cutting average of 50.4mpg. This increases to 56.5mpg on the extra-urban cycle. Fuel frugality keeps emissions low, so road tax costs a pleasing £130 for twelve months. Oh, you will also need £13,685 plus VAT to buy the van.
