What is the best thing we can say about the Ford C-Max 1.6 TDCi Zetec? Well, here it comes.... this five seated multi-purpose vehicle does not drive like a five-seated multi- purpose vehicle. It feels like a properly sorted 'car'. Quite a contrast to some MPVs that corner like cross-channel ferries. As such, the capable C-Max is composed through the apexes, has responsive steering, slick five-speed manual transmission, and a comfortable ride. It suits those who want family-focussed practicality in a pleasingly dynamic package.

More good news. The Ford C-Max 1.6 TDCi Zetec is kinder to your wallet than a substantial inheritance. It averages 61.4mpg, and manages 68.9mpg on the extra-urban cycle. Even around town this cost-cutter's dream returns 52.3mpg. As such its emissions are only 119g/ km, so twelve months road tax costs £30. Despite its environmental wizardry this workhorse has respectable performance, so it reaches 62mph in 11.3 seconds. Good stuff.

Further strengths include the rock-solid construction and its maximum five-star Euro NCAP safety rating. Standard luggage capacity is a satisfactory 471-litres, but this increases to an impressive 1,723-litres by folding the rear seats flat. Standard equipment includes the: electronic stability programme, air-conditioning, electric front windows, MP3 connectivity, and Bluetooth. Parking sensors are a £525 optional extra. What a fantastic car for £18,695.
