Ford Disappoints With SUV

Now in Europe we might not have heard of the EcoSport (pronounced EchoSport) but it has been around since 2003 zipping through the streets of Brazil.  Designed over there Ford has now released it to the rest of the world.

Ford EcoSport Exterior and Interior

Thesmall SUV segment is the fastest growing in Britain so the EcoSport goes up against the likes of the Nissan Juke, Renault Captur and Vauxhall Mokka.  It certainly rivals them in the looks department with its stocky and sturdy stance, a very large, distinctive front grille and short bonnet.  An unsightly rear tyre attached to the side-opening tailgate and aluminium plates on the front and rear completes the wannabe 4x4 look.

As much as we liked the exterior design, the interior was a bit of a let down.  It’s spacious enough and there are many storage compartments dotted about the car, but the quality isn’t great, the plastics feel extremely cheap and it all seems like an afterthought by the designers.

The seats, although comfortable are small and there isn’t much depth to them either.  The majority of the Victoria’s Secret models may come from Brazil and would fit in the seats perfectly, but Ford haven’t catered well for most body shapes.

The centre console is littered with buttons, but your phone can be linked up to their Ford SYNC with AppLink system which lets you listen to your own music or make and receive calls by voice command.   Turquoise green seems to be the colour of choice in the car.  It features on the digital information display in the centre of the vehicle, on the buttons and instrument dials.

There is just Titanium trim.  Equipment includes 16” alloy wheels, silver roof rails, a tyre pressure monitoring system, trip computer and a multifunction leather steering wheel and handbrake.   Titanium X pack has additions such as rain sensing wipers, cruise control and has leather throughout at a cost of an extra £1,000 for the pack.

With seven body colours to choose from, five being metallic, it is interesting to find Bright Yellow doesn’t cost any extra.  Diamond White costs £250, while the vibrant Kinetic Blue and Mars Red cost an extra £495.

Ford EcoSport Engine and Driving

There are three engines available, two petrol and a diesel.  The award-winning 1.0-litre Ecoboost produces 125PS and has a top speed of 112mph and feels surprisingly quick and eager.  It zipped around Barcelona traffic easily and pulled away from static traffic with ease.  Their new engine, the 1.5-litre Duratec will also be an option which produces 112PS is available as a manual or automatic.

Their diesel option, the 1.5-litre Duratorq TDCi doesn’t perform as well and with a maximum power output of 91PS it struggles massively.  Driving up slight inclines is noisy, laboured and not enjoyable at all.

The EcoBoost engine emits just 125g/km so no VED cost and has a combined 53.3mpg figure so ideal for those wanting a fuel efficient engine.  The diesel also falls into the no cost VED and can manage an increased 61.4mpg.

The EcoSport is great to drive though, it feels solid, not much body roll and really is grippy.  Around the twisty roads in the hills above Barcelona, it was really responsive.

Ford EcoSport Safety

The EcoSport achieved four stars in the Euro NCAP tests and safety features include airbags, anti-locking braking system (ABS), electronic stability control (ESP) and emergency brake assist (EBA).

Ford EcoSport Pricing

From £14,995 it is reasonably priced, but it seems like Ford have rushed to get another model out in the European market and the quality just doesn’t seem up to scratch if you compare it to its rivals.
