What can you buy for £8,545? The Ford Ka 1.2 Studio for starters. This may be the cheapest vehicle produced by Ford, but it offers motorists a reasonable bang for their bucks. It is virtually effortless to drive, inspires confidence in the corners, has a comfortable ride, and a fair amount of room considering it is the size of a stamp. It also has stylish good looks and plenty of character – traits that are prized in the city car sector.

The Ford Ka 1.2 Studio produces 69ps and hits 62mph in 13.4 seconds. Not fast, but it compensates by only sipping its fuel. This three-door run-around averages 57.7mpg and manages 64.2mpg on the extra-urban cycle. Even around town, where cars tend to guzzle-gas, this workhorse returns 48.7mpg. Emissions are only 115g/km, which equates to road tax band C/£30. Diesel versions are more efficient still, but these start at £11,295.

The Ford Ka 1.2 Studio clearly has plenty of strengths, particularly considering its tiny £8,545 price tag. However, motorists who love gadgets best look elsewhere. Equipment includes: power steering, an immobiliser, twin air-bags, and the CD player. That is about it. No chance – even if paying extra – to have electric front windows or air-con. Curiously, rear parking sensors are a £200 option. Hardly necessary on such a pint-sized vehicle.

There is a school of thought that basic-spec cars are, in many ways, better buys than more complicated machinery. After all, there is less to go wrong. If this is your philosophy and you want a fun-focussed city plaything, the Ford Ka 1.2 Studio makes perfect sense.
