Hyundai Blue Drive technology focuses on reducing the fleet's fuel consumption and carbon emissions. This is achieved through a series of technical innovations. For starters, the Korean company has developed an 'intelligent stop and go' feature. This, depending on the type of driving, can reduce fuel consumption by up to 15%. The trick is to automatically switch-off the engine while the vehicle is stationary in traffic. It then springs back to life when the driver presses the clutch. Other manufacturers have similar systems.

Hyundai has also created an eco-drive indicator feature. This helps motorists minimise fuel consumption by suggesting when to change gear. The potential saving is 7-9%. This complements the low-rolling resistance tyres and the electric power steering that both require less power than many alternatives. Furthermore, the diesel particulate filter virtually eliminates exhaust smoke by catching the soot. The alternator management system maximises efficiency too, by only charging the battery when the engine is working gently.

Hyundai Blue Drive technology is available on vehicles such as the ix20, ix35, and the Santa Fe. However, not every environmental feature is fitted to every model. As such eco- warriors may be most attracted to the i10 Blue. This is the first 'signature model'. Average fuel consumption is 67.3mpg and this rises to a mighty 74.3mpg on the extra-urban cycle. Furthermore, this city car's emissions are 99g/km so it can be taxed for free. Excellent.
