The Hyundai i40 Tourer 2.0 GDi Premium is circling the competition. That is risky, as rivals include the VW Passat, Ford Mondeo, and Vauxhall Insignia. So, why does the sharply-suited i40 feel feisty? This family hold-all is very capable. In fact, it matches - and in some ways beats - its competitors. Just look at the boot. At 1,719-litres, it has more space than the Insignia and virtually the same as the Mondeo and Passat. The i40 also has engaging handling, so it feels more involving than the VW and the Vauxhall. Furthermore, this is the most powerful 174bhp trim so it has plenty of torque for easy load- lugging. It also hits 62mph in 9.7 seconds, which although modest is quicker than some similarly priced rivals.

The new Hyundai i40 Tourer 2.0 GDi Premium has other strengths to assault its established competitors. These include the five year, unlimited mileage, fully transferable warranty. Talk about peace of mind, particularly as the i40 is loaded with gadgets. These include: parking sensors, Bluetooth, cruise control, an electric sunroof, and MP3 connectivity. It has leather seats too. Considering the i40 is powered by a potent petrol engine, this £23,795 workhorse is also frugal. It averages 39.2mpg and returns 56.5mpg on the extra-urban cycle. Great car then - as long as you ignore the unfashionable badge.
