Bit of a debate here. Is the Mercedes-Benz E-Class 63 AMG the greatest estate in the world? It is certainly one of the largest. This leviathan's cargo capacity is a staggering 1,950-litres. Even with five passengers aboard this lifestyle statement carries 690-litres of swanky executive luggage. Its footprint is consistent with its impressive capacity, so this beast is nearly five metres long. It is clearly one of the most imposing estates in the world.

Under the bonnet sits a 6.2-litre V8 engine. This 525ps monster propels the Mercedes- Benz E-Class 63 AMG to 62mph in 4.6 seconds. Top speed is 155mph, so this seven- speed auto is easily one of the fastest estates on the market. The downside to its astonishing performance and sheer bulk is the running costs. This gas-guzzler averages 22.1mpg, and this falls to 15mpg in town. Emissions are an alarming 299g/km, so twelve months road tax costs an eye-watering £460. And the car itself? Write a check for £76,020.

The Mercedes-Benz E-Class 63 AMG feels totally composed on the road. The steering is pin-sharp, the automatic transmission smooth and responsive, and the ride is more cosseting than your favourite childhood teddy. There are also plenty of toys to make life easier. These include the: electric tailgate, memory seats, parking sensors, tyre pressure loss warning system, and cruise control. Sounds rather similar to the mk1 Vauxhall Corsa.

So, is the Mercedes-Benz E-Class the greatest estate in the world? Its main rivals are the BMW 5 Series Tourer and the Audi A6 Avant. These are tremendous machines, but both have smaller cargo capacities than the E-Class. The Mercedes – in all its forms - also has a presence, an x-factor that its rivals lack in comparison. It somehow feels more complete, more desirable, and far more than the sum of its parts. Game, set, and match Mercedes.
