My mate just bought his girlfriend a MINI Coupe Cooper S for her birthday. And what a sight. It looks tremendous wrapped in shining paper and fifty yards of red ribbon. Someone is in for a treat come the big day. Once the wrapping is removed the car's delighted owner might be shocked. The 1.6-litre petrol engine produces 184bhp, for starters, so this plaything hits 62mph in only 7.0 seconds. Flat-out it hits 142mph, which is the speed birthday cake vanishes in my house. The running costs are impressive too. Despite being super-fast, this rocket averages a pleasing 48.7mpg – and can be taxed annually for £115. The MINI Coupé Cooper S – once the final bits of wrapping have been thrown into the corner near the cheaper presents – will be seen in all its 'glory'. Is that a good thing? The styling is certainly original - it is distinctive too – but is it attractive? Whereas this is subjective, I cannot find many people who love the looks. Has my friend bought the wrong car? Probably not, as the composed chassis, high-quality construction, and decent internal specification compensate for the 'iffy' looks. Standard features include the: electronic stability programme, parking sensors, and air-con. Leather costs a further £845. The car itself is £18,075. Still, wait until my partner's birthday. She is getting a big tube of Smarties.
