The new Audi A4 Allroad 3.0 TDI Quattro may look like a traditional estate car, but it has various special features to inspire mud plunging motorists. These include confidence inspiring four-wheel drive, high ground clearance, and plastic body mouldings to protect the paint. These characteristics mean the A4 Allroad has some of the capabilities of a sports-utility vehicle, albeit in a more compact package.

The Audi A4 Allroad 3.0 TDI Quattro produces 236bhp and 369-lb-ft of torque, and this power is sent to the wheels via seven-speed automatic transmission. This commendable output is enough to propel this practical estate, and up to 1430-litres of luggage, to 60mph in only 6.2 seconds. Top speed is 148mph which is impressive for a 1730KG vehicle that averages 39mph and sits in road tax band J/£235.

The A4 Allroad's handling is similar to the A4 Avant so it rides beautifully, has precise steering, and is very relaxing to drive. The four-wheel drive system makes negotiating slippery roads easier than falling off a log and it can competently cruise through muddy fields. However, this likeable vehicle is designed for light off-road use and is no match for a full size SUV should the terrain become tougher than a high level maths exam.

Standard A4 Allroad 3.0 TDI Quattro specification includes (pause for dramatic effect) the three-zone climate control system with separate air distribution for the driver and front passenger. Wow. There is also cruise control, rear parking sensors, bluetooth, and six air-bags that contributed to the A4 Allroad's maximum five-star Euro NCAP safety rating.

The new Audi A4 Allroad 3.0 TDI Quattro is an expensive vehicle, and this reflects its capabilities and prestige. The list price is actually £36,145, but Motoring.co.uk's new car database reveals the range as a whole is available from £30,315. Granted, this is a considerable sum but the A4 Allroad is an awful lot of car.
