The new Bentley Continental GT is a fearsome predator disguised as an old-world gentleman's club. Its revised 6.0-litre W12 engine now produces 567bhp, compared to the old model's 552bhp. Torque increase also from 479 to 516lb ft. That is probably enough to make the world spin backwards, and certainly enough to propel the Continental GT to 60mph in 4.6 seconds. And the top speed? How does 197mph sound?

Stylistically, the new Continental GT looks remarkably similar to its predecessor. However, there are a few minor changes that keep this two-door beauty looking sharp. The wheel arches, for example, are broadened to accommodate a wider track; the headlights have been tweaked, and the bonnet is now longer. That should disperse the popular perception that the GT is rather short nosed. No surprise then it was picked-on at school.

Many of these revised body panels are shaped using a new technique called super forming. This involves heating sheet aluminium to five-hundred degrees Celsius, then blasting it with high-pressure air to form the components. This creates a beautifully crisp finish that helps the Continental GT stand out from the crowd. No wonder prices for this curvaceous coupé now start at £135,760, a five-figure increase over the late model.

More 'hot off the press' news is that the new Bentley Continental GT will, in due course, be available with a 4.0-litre V8 engine. Clearly, this will offer motorists all the power they 'need', but I would still rather bust my credit card for the 6.0-litre W12. Whichever engine is fitted, drivers benefit from a fantastic four-wheel-drive system, tremendous handling, and a sumptuous interior that includes a new touch-screen control system. Sign me up.
