Ready for some facts? Number one.... the new Chevrolet Aveo 1.2 S is a small car. It has four wheels, one engine, several seats, and five-speed manual transmission. Its purpose is to move people around without costing more than a Hollywood divorce settlement. That is about it. No thrills, no fuss. On these terms this supermini is successful. After all, prices for the three door start at £9,195 and even the more practical five-door only costs £9,815.

The Chevrolet Aveo's 1.2-litre engine produces 84ps at 6,000rpm. Not much, but enough to send this simple supermini to 62mph in 12.8 seconds. Average fuel consumption is 51.3mpg, but this improves to 61.4mpg on the extra-urban cycle. Even through town both body styles manage 39.7mpg. Emissions are 130g/km, so twelve months road tax costs £95. Not amazingly frugal, but running costs are still low. The five-year warranty helps too.

The Chevrolet Aveo 1.2 S has respectable road manners. It feels perfectly secure, even though it leans more than expected through the corners. That said the ride is comfortable, the gearbox smooth, and it is very easy to drive. Once again, no thrills no fuss. This straightforward and basic philosophy extends to the specification. This includes: power steering, central locking, electric front windows, and split/fold rear seats. That is about it.

The Aveo is clearly a simple 'no nonsense' run-about. There are more refined cars for the money, but it is worth considering if you want something unusual with a five year warranty.
