The new Chevrolet Cruze is the motoring equivalent of a mysterious masked man. As such, there are consistent rumours that this four-door saloon exists – but few can claim to have actually seen it. Those who have recognise its numerous strengths. These include the muscular styling, memorable interior, and a certain unquantifiable x-factor. The price is appealing too, as this VW Jetta rival could be your new love interest from only £13,805.

The new Chevrolet Cruze comes with a choice of three engines. The entry-level 1.6-litre petrol manual version produces 124PS, reaches 62mph in 10.9 seconds, and averages 43.4mpg. Not bad. The 1.8-litre knocks-out 141PS, is marginally faster and has virtually identical fuel consumption. It also has more torque for easier driving. The top-of-the-range model of this mysterious stranger has a 2.0-litre 163PS diesel engine. In manual guise, this hits 62mph in a highly respectable 8.5 seconds and averages a purse-pleasing 50.4mpg.

Now, mysterious men need to be agile so they can swing from balconies and present chocolates to loved-up women. The new Chevrolet Cruze is agile too. This four-door beauty can be confidently thrown into corners as it has plenty of traction and impressive body control. That said, this is not a sports car and the steering can feel over-light. On the plus side the ride is comfortable, the manual transmission smooth, and it is a relaxing car to drive.

The new Chevrolet Cruze is a huge step forwards on its predecessor, the Lacetti. This was more dating disaster than smooth Romeo. As such the Cruze is a car you might actually buy. It feels grown-up, capable, properly screwed together, and ready for work. A perfect choice for motorists who want something distinctive and easy to live with. Well done Chevrolet.
