The Citroen C3 range has caused a family row. Dad, for starters, is very careful with money. As such, he loves his e-HDi 70 Airdream EGS VTR+. This averages a staggering 83.1mpg, and returns an almost unbelievable 88.3mpg on the extra-urban cycle. Even through town it manages 78.5mpg. Carbon emissions are only 87g/km, so this environmental wizard can be taxed for free. Not bad for a five-door car that costs £15,290.

However, the family's teenage son mocks his father's cost-effective run-around. He argues that 68bhp is too little, and that taking 16.2 seconds to reach 62mph is laughable. He, therefore, purchased the most powerful variant in the range – the 120bhp 1.6 16v VTi Exclusive 5dr. This races to 62mph in 8.9 seconds, which is reasonably fast for the class. It may guzzle more gas than his father's, but it still manages a pleasing 47.9mpg. And the price? Curiously, it costs £15,290 - which is exactly the same as the super-efficient variant.

Mum thinks her husband and son are nuts. She has an entry-level 1.1i 8v VT 5dr. Mum has more cash too, as she only paid £11,390. Her variant has similar acceleration to her husband's, and similar fuel economy to her son's. That suits her fine, considering what she paid. Every Citroen C3 has a class-competitive 300-litre boot, easy handling characteristics, and fun looks. Perhaps there is a C3 for everyone; so please stop arguing!
