The new Citroen DS3 has more charisma than a stand-up comedian, more style than a Hollywood film premier, and more curb appeal than a millionaire's mansion. The result is that the French manufacturer has produced a fantastically capable machine that, unlike many sensibly priced cars, is a genuinely thrilling plaything.

Now, despite being styled like a piece of ground-braking artwork the new Citroen DS3 comes with a choice of conventional engines. The most powerful is the 1.6-litre 150bhp petrol that propels art lovers to 62mph in 7.3 seconds, and races towards the Tate Modern at 133mph. It also averages 42mpg, but if you need to travel a great distance in search of a Van Goth masterpiece, the 1.6-litre 90bhp diesel is far more economical. This returns a staggering combined average of 74.3mpg and hits 62mph in 11.5 seconds.

The new Citroen DS3's handling is very, very entertaining. It genuinely feels like a properly sorted run-around and is guaranteed to bring a smile to your face. This fun-focused handling means the DS3 has excellent body control, sharp steering, and plenty of traction for negotiating tricky corners near cutting-edge art exhibits. These characteristics give the DS3 sporty credibility that will hopefully be inherited by its forthcoming siblings.

The DS3's interior, in contrast to some French machinery, feels properly screwed together. That is just as well considering its specification. The entry level Dsign gets electric windows, power mirrors, and a CD stereo with steering wheel mounted controls. The Dstyle adds air- conditioning and LED lights, and the top of the range DSport has Bluetooth, a USB connector, and an alarm to stop your pride and joy being pinched by a jealous art collector.

The new Citroen DS3 has a list price of £11,800 - £16,000. That is great value considering how much fun you can have playing around inside the stylish cockpit. Excellent work Citroen, keep it up.
