Brace yourself. The new Ferrari 458 Spider has been revealed at the Frankfurt Motor Show. What can we say? There are barely enough adjectives in the world to properly describe this mighty two-door convertible. The sweeping lines, monstrous wheels, and vast bonnet look astonishing. Under the bodywork sits a 4.5-litre V8 engine that propels this hard-core racer from 0-100km/h in about 3.4 seconds. Is that faster than Concorde?

The Ferrari 458 Spider has some extra touches to complement its performance. It has a fully-retractable aluminium hardtop roof, for example. This is a world first for a mid- rear-engined two-seater. Ferrari say the roof is 25kg lighter than a traditional soft-top and opens or closes in fourteen seconds. It also provides excellent thermal and noise insulation – and is small enough to allow space for a rear luggage bench. Very handy.

Another pleasing feature is the rear windscreen. This is not an emergency system for those who accidentally drive backwards - it is an electric windbreak. So, when the Ferrari's roof is open the rear windscreen moves to the most aerodynamically efficient position. This reduces cockpit buffering and makes life more comfortable for the occupants. Very clever, and what a contrast to some now classic soft-tops that can permanently rearrange your face. Someone please buy me a Ferrari 458 Spider. Thanks.
