The Fiat Doblo 1.4 Active has more storage space than a prize-winning warehouse. In
fact, this multi-purpose vehicle's capacity is a staggering 3,200-litres with the rear seats
removed. This falls to 790-litres with five passengers aboard. Let us put these figures in
perspective: Ford Mondeo Estate – 1,728/537-litres, Mercedes-Benz E-Class Estate –
1,950/695-litres, Land Rover Discovery 4 – 2,558/280-litres. These vehicles are both more
expensive and have larger footprints than the £13,300 Doblo. This capable load-lugger
has tardis-like dimensions as it is based on the Doblo Cargo Van. Never fear though, the
handling feels car-like as Punto Evo components have been shoehorned into its chassis.
Now for the bad news. The Fiat Doblo 1.4 Active only produces 95bhp, so it takes 15.4
seconds to reach 62mph. That is a rather long time. Furthermore, this workhorse only
averages 39.2mpg so trips to the petrol station can be frequent. This mile-muncher could
also benefit from a few more toys. It lacks electric rear windows and cruise control, and
even air-conditioning is a £650 option. Not ideal for a family car. But hey, this machine still
has lots to offer. It is a cavernous working van by day and an affordable kids' taxi by night.
