Rejoice! The new Fiat Panda is a miracle of nature. Getting pandas to breed, after all, is harder than chewing through bamboo with dentures. This new city car is larger than its parents, but still looks like a chip-off-the-old-block. This is pleasing, as its unconventionally attractive styling distinguishes this workhorse from the other animals. The Panda is available in three new trim levels: Pop, Easy, and Lounge. Standard features include: electric windows, central locking, power steering, and four air-bags – and the mid-spec Easy has remote central locking, air-con, and roof rails too. Finally, the top-spec Lounge has fifteen-inch alloys, electric mirrors, and front fog lights. But that is only part of the story.

The new Fiat Panda has remarkable safety systems. It is available, for starters, with a low-speed collision mitigation system. This uses a windscreen mounted laser to monitor the distance between itself and the vehicle ahead. If necessary, this black and white run- around brakes automatically to avoid an impact. That is impressive, particularly for a car that starts at £8,900 on-the-road. This complements features such as the seatbelt pre- tensioners, active anti-whiplash head restraints, and the electronic stability programme that keeps the car glued to the road. The Panda has clearly evolved. Darwin would love it.
