Am I seeing things? It looks like the new Ford Focus is over there, over there, and over there too. I must have seen a dozen of these small family cars in the last thirty seconds. That is hardly surprising as this practical mile-muncher is one of the best selling cars on the market. But why? For starters, there is a model to suit virtually everyone. Motorists can choose either the stylish five-door hatchback or the 1,502-litre estate – and these come with numerous fantastic engines. Choose the 1.6-litre 95ps diesel, for example, to average a purse-pleasing 67.3mpg - or the 1.6-litre 150ps petrol to rocket to 62mph in 8.6 seconds.

The Ford Focus' equipment list has wide appeal too. Some motorists prefer basic cars and believe that fancy gadgets are simply things to go wrong. Fair enough, try the entry-level Studio trim. This has the essentials of life, such as air-con and power steering, but lacks what some claim to be unnecessary fluff. In contrast, technology lovers can choose the top-spec Titanium X 2.0-litre. This has: leather seats, parking sensors, four electric windows, and cruise control. Every model also has: tremendous handling, robust construction, a five-star Euro NCAP safety rating, and fantastic looks. Not bad for £13,995 - £25,100. Great, but I still have no idea whether I am seeing things. I must see my doctor.
