Shocked? Surprised? Not me... it was inevitable the new Ford Focus ST would be named Auto Express' Best Hot-Hatch. Just look at its credentials. The 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol engine produces 250bhp and 360Nm of torque. The result is 0-62mph in only 6.5 seconds and a top speed of 155mph. That is shocking, considering it comes as a family-friendly five-door hatchback and an estate. And unsurprisingly - considering the rest of the range - the Focus ST has pin-sharp handling, a staggering variety of equipment, and rock-solid build. And guess what? After a surprisingly long wait this predator is now available. 450 have been sold, in fact, even though it will not grace the showrooms until September 2012.

The new Ford Focus ST has been busy prior to its launch. It starred, for starters, in The Sweeny movie – where it helped Flying Squad Detectives Jack Regan and George Carter snatch a few collars. But, surprisingly, that is not enough for the Focus ST. This crook- catcher has been spotted at the 2012 Goodwood Festival of Speed. Here, with stunt drivers replacing the Flying Squad detectives, it recreated a scene from the film by chasing a Jaguar XFR up the famous hill. What a sight... a jet-black ST harassing a bright red Jaguar; and all prior to launch. I suspect the Focus ST has a few more surprises in its bag.
