Stop the press. The Ford Mondeo 1.6 TDCi Zetec is tremendous value for money. In fact, anyone looking for a practical five-door hatchback may find it ticks all the boxes. Build quality and cabin finish, for starters, feel excellent. 'Tick'. Furthermore the handling is top- class, the ride comfortable, and it has space for five people plus 537-litres of luggage. This increases to a generous 1,728-litres when the rear seats are folded flat. Tick and tick.

Next on the check-list is the inevitable subject of cold hard cash. The Ford Mondeo 1.6 TDCi Zetec costs a temptingly low £20,795, plus any options. Not bad. Fuel economy is impressive too, so this family favourite averages a mighty 65.7mpg. This rises to 72.4mpg on the extra-urban cycle, and even through town this versatile workhorse manages 56.5mpg. Furthermore, twelve months road tax only costs £30 thanks to its low emissions. Another 'tick' then, even though this 115PS hatchback takes a lengthy 11.9s to hit 62mph.

The 'Zetec' specification is mid-range so it has plenty of nice toys. These include its stop/ start system that switches-off the engine when the car sits still. Perfect for saving fuel at the traffic lights. Other standard features include: climate control, Bluetooth, and four electric windows. It might also be worth adding the £450 parking sensors, as these are helpful on large cars and a useful second-hand selling point. Another tick for the Mondeo.
