The new Honda Civic is an extremely mysterious machine. The official photographs show it literally 'in disguise', presumably to conceal its potential from rivals. As such we cannot get a clear impression of its styling, but it looks relatively restrained and familiar. The ninth generation of this small family workhorse will be available from early 2012. Details are sketchy, but it will apparently have ''class leading space for passengers and luggage'.

This will be achieved, according to the Japanese motoring giant, by retaining the existing rear torsion beam suspension system. However, the latest set-up uses fluid- filled compliance bushes to improve the overall ride quality and handling. It has also been strengthened to give better stability, particularly at high speeds. Sounds promising. Perhaps the new Focus, which is one of the best handling cars in class, should watch out.

The new Honda Civic has lots to live-up too. The original model was launched in 1972, and 20 million have been sold globally in 160 markets. Of these, 650,000 vehicles have been registered in the UK, including 170,000 of the current eighth generation. The Civic has a reputation for bullet-proof reliability, sensible running costs, and ease of ownership. It makes perfect sense as an everyday family mile-muncher. Bring on the next generation.
