Question for you... what would be your first thought having spent £93,880 on a Lexus
LS 600h? Mine might “oh dear” - as large executive saloons cost a fortune to run. But
hold on, this top-of-the-range mile muncher is a hybrid. Surely, therefore, it must be
more efficient than a wind-powered bike. Bad news then. This BMW 7 Series rival only
averages 30.4mpg. Emissions are 218g/km, so despite its electric motor the LS cannot
wave the environmental flag. Presumably its 5.0-litre 439bhp V8 engine hinders efficiency.
Let us put its fuel consumption and performance in perspective. The Lexus LS 600h hits
62mph in 6.3 seconds and is capable of 155mph. The Jaguar XJ 3.0 V6 Diesel Luxury
has virtually identical performance - and manages a highly impressive 40.1mpg. That is
9.7mpg more from the 'non-hybrid' diesel powered Jaguar. Even the mighty Mercedes-
Benz S-Class 500 BlueEFFICIENCY – which is far quicker to 62mph than the Lexus –
manages 30.1mpg. Makes me wonder if there is any purpose to the LS hybrid technology.
Puzzling electric credentials aside, the Lexus LS 600h is an astonishing machine. The
ride is exemplary, the finish masterful, and the overall feel is supremely refined. This
beautifully crafted saloon also has more gadgets than the Space Shuttle. These include
the: card entry and start system (no key required), headlights that turn with the steering,
a rear cool box, and four-zone climate control. Very nice, but the Jaguar XJ 3.0 V6 Diesel
Luxury has numerous gadgets too - plus a similar acceleration, better looks, and stronger
environmental credentials. Guess what? The Jaguar XJ only costs £55,515. Easy choice.
