The new Mercedes-Benz E220 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY SE estate's storage capacity is so vast that is makes a warehouse look short on space. To be precise, this prestigious lifestyle statement can hold 695-litres of luggage with the rear seats in place, and up to 1950-litres with the seats folded flat.

This monstrous storage space is also versatile and user friendly. Features include an electric tailgate that can be operated from the driver's seat, via key fobs, and by a switch mounted on the boot door. In addition, the E220 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY SE has a two-piece folding floor that can be moved to accommodate tall items, plus a useful automatically sliding luggage cover.

Now, the Mercedes-Benz E220 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY SE can clearly hold a considerable amount of weight – but does it have the power to shift it? Well, indeed it does. The 2.2- litre 170hp four-cylinder diesel engine propels its luggage loving owner to 62mph in only 8.8 seconds. Top speed is 135mph, which is impressive for a large vehicle that returns a combined average of 49.6mpg.

Handling-wise the new Mercedes-Benz E220 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY SE is everything a motorist could reasonably expect from a luxury estate. The steering is sharper than Oscar Wilde's best retort, the ride smoother than a skinhead's brow, and the cabin more luxurious than a millionaire's city pad. The E-Class is clearly one of those vehicles to drive just for fun, whether you effortlessly cruise along or charge between the apexes.

So, let's breach the dirty subject of money. This highly commendable vehicle is listed in Motoring.co.uk's new car database from £30,715. Whereas this is a chunky pile of cash, the E-Class is one of the most prestigious, capable, and practical estate cars on the market. I'll have a red one please!
